Santos clobber Shortwood in Golden League
DEFENDING champions Santos ran by Shortwood 7-0 in the feature match of the 2012 Bull Investments Limited-sponsored Golden League Football Competition which kicked off last Saturday at the Barbican playing field.
Bull Investments Limited, who are the first sponsors of the competition, pumped $150,000 in this year’s renewal. Director, Simone Gentles said that her company was pleased to be associated with this competition, as it provided an avenue for players over 45 years old to be active and encouraged them to remember that its is for fun and camaraderie and not just about winning.
In the opening game, Pelican and St George’s Old Boys played to an exciting 0-0 draw, while in the second match a goal by Lloyd Distant in the 58th minute carried former champions Real Mona to a 1-0 victory over Wonders.
In the final game, Santos ran by Shortwood 7-0, with last season’s leading goalscorer Gordon Murphy scoring a hat-trick. Nyron Prawl scored a brace and Ian Burnett and Delano Palmer got the other goals for Santos, who led 3-0 at half-time. The league continues each weekend with triple headers at the Barbican playing field.
