Man with wood in box gets 6 months
A man who gave a woman a box of wood after collecting $11,000 from her for a flat screen TV has been sentenced to six months in prison.
Christopher Mais was sentenced by Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey to only six months because he returned the complainant’s money in court.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny by trick.
But in a dramatic twist, Mais, who did not utter a word during sentencing, had to be coaxed out of the holding area, after he started shouting that he was not going to prison.
During his outburst he complained of being injured on the head while in lockup.
It was reported that the woman was in downtown Kingston on November 25 last year when she was approached by Mais who told her that he was a worker at Khemlani Mart and could give her “backdoor deal” on a flatscreen TV for $22,000.
The complainant was given a box which she believed contained the TV, after paying Mais $11,000.
It was only after the complainant arrived home that she realised she had been given a box of wood.
She immediately telephoned Mais but he hung up the phone and refused to answer subsequent calls from her.
On December 23, the complainant again spotted Mais downtown and confronted him, but he denied owing her.
Mais was dragged by the complainant to a nearby police station.
