George’s, Edith, KC notch wins in Rugby League
ST George’s College, Edith Dalton-James, Kingston College (KC) and Greater Portmore High threw their weight around in the opening week of the Surrey County Rugby League High Schools Under-19 and Under-16 Championships.
In the Under-19s, Jerome Rose with two conversions, Courtney Lawes, Jervel Thomas and Oshane Dunbar ensured that Edith Dalton James High blanked St Catherine 16-0.
Captain and stand-half Lawes broke through weak tackles after four minutes to score under the posts and centre Thomas added the second of the half in the left corner. Rose then converted both kicks as Edith Dalton James High rushed to 12-0 at half time.
Despite several incursions from St Catherine High, they failed to breach their opponents defensive line.
Winger Dunbar piled on the agony when he made his way to the try line 10 minutes to the end.
A Jevaughn Fearon fumble muffed St Catherine High’s consolation attempt when he crashed over the try line with a few minutes remaining.
In another Under-19 match in the opening games last week, Anthony Roy (two tries) and Rojae Francis got the job done for Greater Portmore High to overcome Campion College 12-6.
Roy scored his double in the first half as Campion College kept on their heels with a try and conversion from Shannon Harris to trail 8-6 at half time.
When Roy breached the Campion defence and outran the cover in the second half, Greater Portmore cruised to victory especially after the Hope Road-based school squandered opportunities through poor ball handling and decision-making.
In other Under-19 results, Calabar High outpointed Spanish Town 10-8, and St George’s College whipped Kingston College 28-6.
Captain Ramone Gordon, winger James Gordon and Rasheed Green steered the Red Hills Road school to victory while boys the Georgians grabbed their three points through Carlisle Brown, Andre Harrison, Sheldon Kelly, and Shannan Boyan.
Meanwhile in the Under-16, Spanish Town High beat Calabar 4-0, and KC crushed St George’s, 12-0.
