Surrey County Schools Champs enter semis
The Surrey County High Schools Rugby League Championships enter the semi-final stage this afternoon in both Under-16 and Under-19 competitions at Campion College.
In the Under-19, Calabar High oppose Spanish Town High at 3:30 and Kingston College clash with St George’s College at 4:30.
In the Under-16, Calabar High go up against Spanish Town High at 2:30, while one hour later Kingston College take on St George’s College.
Last week in quarter-final action at Kingston College, two tries from Shashawny Smith, and one each from Nicholas Broodie and Remone Gordon ensured that Calabar High crushed St Catherine High 16-0.
Flaunting their big forwards, executing clever plays, and debuting players in new positions, Calabar High dominated midfield to dismantle St Catherine High in preparation for the semi-finals.
Greater Portmore High showed they were the team to beat when three tries and four conversions from Paul Walker, two tries from Tevin Phillips, two tries from Anthony Roy and a try each from Jerome Tyrell, Odane Gordon and Ryan Hall drove them to a 52-6 drubbing of Kingston College.
Rojae Francis added a conversion for Greater Portmore as Mikhail Francis (tries) and Roje Sales (conversion) countered for KC.
While Greater Portmore nullified the resistance of KC, the final score belied the bravery and fight of the North Street-based team during a match in which tempers flared and hits were fast and furious.
In the Under-16 quarter-finals played at Kingston College, tries from Paul Byfield and Roshane Taylor enabled St George’s College to shock Greater Portmore High 8-0, while Spanish Town High with two tries apiece from Janoy Dean and Takeem Creary propelled them to a 16-4 win over St Catherine High.
Ricardo Shippie put St Catherine High on the scoresheet.
In the other quarter-finals Kingston College overpowered Edith Dalton James High 24-4 and Calabar High spanked Campion College 16-0.
