Pembroke Hall rally for ‘A’ League title
ASHANTA Williams scored an unbeaten 102 as Pembroke Hall High school defeated Papine High by a 105 runs to lift the ISSA/First Global ‘A’ League cricket title at Melbourne Cricket Club yesterday.
Scores in the game: Pembroke Hall 72 all out and 233-7 declared, Papine High 84 and 116.
Williams hit one six and 10 fours in his century knock, as the victors rallied from a first innings deficit of 12 runs for a remarkable victory. He received valuable support from Courtney Dowdie with 56 runs.
Travertte Williams and Roje Barrett were the pick of the bowlers for Pembroke Hall, with 3-57 and 4-70, respectively.
Devion Baker was the topscorer for Papine with 25 runs.
The chief wicket-takers for the winners were Patrick Dixon with 3-19, Kimano Dawkins with 2-28, and Williams with 2-11.
Winning coach Winston Lambert said it was an excellent day for his team.
“I said yesterday (Tuesday) that if we make 180 (runs) we would be capitalising on it today. But I was always confident in my bowling, with (Kimano) Dawkins the captain, and Dale Smith, who has taken the most wickets for the season… so I was always confident they would do the job,” he said.
Williams said he also believed their bowling attack would do the job for the team.
“Papine coach said he would bowl us out for 50, but is it 50 now,” the young batsman asked.
Losing coach Shane Brooks believed inexperience was the main reason for the loss.
“We bowled them out for a small total of 72, and we should have made a big score so we could bowl them out the second time and get the victory.
“But because the guys are inexperienced and a little indisciplined…. we did not show all that Papine can do, because we can bat and bowl much better,” he lamented.
