Do or die!
LUCEA, Hanover – FORMER champions Granville FC will have to play with their all on Sunday when they face relegation-bound Mt Pelier FC in a rescheduled third-round game at Watson Taylor Park, if they are to qualify for the semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Federation’s Captain’s Bakery and Grill Western Confederation Super League.
The semi-finals were due to start this Sunday but Tuesday’s game between Granville and Mt Pelier had to be postponed due to a water-logged field.
Three teams, Wadadah, Harmony and Savannah have already qualified to the semi-finals that will now be played on Sunday, April 22 at the Frome sports grounds.
Wadadah had lost their final-round game to Harmony 1-0.
Granville FC is currently in fifth place on 26 points, one behind Tomorrow’s People and must win Sunday’s game by at least six goals if they are to go ahead of their fellow St James club and clinch the fourth spot in the semi-finals.
Tomorrow’s People who got points and three goals from Frome FC, who have dropped out of the competition, has a healthy plus-13 goal difference to Granville’s plus-eight and would get into the semi-finals for the first time if Granville were unable to win by six clear goals.
Meanwhile, Harmony secured their place after edging an under-strength Wadadah FC 1-0 at Bounty Hall with the winning goal coming from Ricardo Reid who was scoring his seventh goal this season, tied with Tomorrow’s People’s Gregory Tape for second.
Reid scored in the 47th minute for the Trelawny club’s eight win of the season, as Wadadah lost for the first time in the third round.
Savannah, who lost in the midseason final to Wadadah, were also on the losing side, edged 3-2 by Catherine Hall to secure their place in the league next season.
Catherine Hall led 2-0 after 51 minutes with goals from Tajay Robinson and Andre Barrett who scored twice to take over the goal scoring lead with eight goals.
Jessie Maylor pulled a goal back for the Westmoreland club in the 53rd minute, but Barrett restored their twogoal cushion in the 73rd minute before Kendrick Quarrie made the game interesting when he scored for Savannah two minutes from the end of regulation, in the 88th minute.
At Flanker, Alme McFarlane scored his second goal of the season to give Fogo a 1-0 win over Jericho Rangers, but that might not be enough for the St James club to stay in the league next season.
As many as six clubs could be relegated this season as in addition to the bottom four, another two could go down to the parish football leagues if both Village United and Reno were relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League at the end of the season.
