Highgate, Sporting end in tie

Highgate…….2 James (68th), Davis (82nd-penalty) Sporting Central…..2 Wynter (8th-penalty), Lewis (45th)

BUFF BAY, Portland — Highgate rallied to earn a 2-2 draw with Sporting Central in their Red Stripe Premier League game at Lynch Park on Sunday.

Sporting Central’s Kadian Wynter (eighth minute) and Gregory Lewis (45th) were on target, while Barrington James (68th) and Donovan Davis (82nd) rallied for Highgate.

Sporting took the lead when Keith Kelly was taken down in the penalty area and referee Valdin Legister pointed to the penalty spot. Skipper Wynter stepped up to score.

Approaching the half-time break, Sporting went further ahead when Kelly crossed to Lewis, who beat with custodian Ralston Robinson with a flighted ball.

Highgate slashed the deficit when Severo Murphy swung a corner in for James to climb high and head home.

The home side found the equaliser with three minutes into added time when Sporting’s Akeem Annakie handled the ball, which forced Legister to award a penalty. Davis calmly slotted home to level the scores.

Sporting Central coach, Nigel Stewart, was pleased with the point. “I am happy for the one point, as we came here short staffed and only had one change. This is very good for us under these conditions,” he said.

Highgate’s Geoffrey Maxwell was disappointed in not getting the three points. “I’m a bit disappointed as we should have put away this game long time. We got a number of chances and should have scored five to six goals,” said the well-travelled coach.
