The Beauty Clinic

Under the Dryer

Shays Day Spa and Beauty Clinic is the ideal place to get a chic makeover. The establishment, formerly known as Y’ashays Day Spa and Beauty Clinic, made the name change in October of last year, but director Keisha Peynado ensures that “the service is still as excellent, as customers have grown accustomed to that over the years”. The Under the Dryer team along with bartenders from J Wray and Nephew — who served refreshing Absolut cocktails — popped in for a visit to check out the offerings. Here is what happened…

Clients: Kemar Clarke, Stacie Morgan, Casey Simpson, Jermaine Manning and Rashida Rose.

Glowing Skin

Kemar Clarke

Kemar popped into the spa to receive a European facial, which he described as being worth his weekly visit. Primarily, he claims the facial helps him control his oily skin unlike any product he has access to on the market. As a result, he tries to make this a part of his regular skincare regime.

Steps:

* Cleanse the face with Sothys Softening Beauty Milk Cleanser.

* Exfoliate the skin with Sothys Gommage Exfoliant best suited for your skin type.

* Use a professional steamer to open the pores. Then apply Desquacreme Deep Pore Cleanser to the skin.

* Extract excess oil and dirt within the pores.

* Massage the face for about 10 minutes.

* Apply Sothys Hydroptimale THI3 Hydrating Mask to the skin and allow it to set for about 15 minutes.

* Remove the mask from the skin.

* Apply a Sothys toner most suitable for your skin type.

* Apply a Sothys hydrating serum.

* Finish the facial by applying a moisturiser.

Kemar’s take:

“I feel like a new man. My skin feels amazing. I have a natural glow now, don’t you think?”

Funky Lips, Jazzy Hair

Stacie Morgan

This recently converted Shays client is convinced that the salon and spa is the best thing that has happened to her hair. “I saw my friend’s hair about five months ago and I thought WOW that’s lovely. So I decided to give it a try. I’ve been hooked ever since,” Stacie explained.

Steps:

* Cleanse the hair with Creme of Nature Sunflower & Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo.

* Apply Matador red semi-permanent hair colour by Dudley’s and a custom-made hot oil treatment to the hair.

* Sit under the dryer with the products in the hair for about 20 minutes.

* Rinse and apply Creme Of Nature Professional Deep Cleansing Neutralizing Shampoo.

* Apply Creme of Nature Sunflower & Coconut Detangling Conditioner to the hair.

* Apply Dudleys DRC 28 Hair Treatment & Fortifier to the hair, then sit under the dryer for 30 minutes or until the hair is dry.

* Apply Dudleys creme press to the hair to prep the hair for styling.

* Mist the hair with Vital Pro Fix-O-Spritz for a soft hold.

* Curl the hair with a ceramic flat iron.

* Style with a wide-tooth comb.

Stacie’s take:

“I love it!”

Flirty Curls

Casey Simpson, receptionist

Shays’ reputation for their treatment of natural hair is what first attracted Casey to the salon. She was also eager to experiment with a new hair colour. She decided that ruby red would be a nice change to her dark hair.

Steps:

* Apply Ruby Ridge permanent hair colour from Pantene Pro-V relaxed and natural for women of colour brand.

* Allow the colour to stay in hair for about 20 minutes.

* Rinse the colour from the hair.

* Cleanse the hair with Affirm normalising shampoo.

* Apply Pantene Pro-V relaxed and natural for women of colour intensive moisturizing conditioner.

* Blow-dry the hair.

* Style the hair with a ceramic flat iron.

Casey’s take:

“My hair looks so different. I like it a lot!”

Spa Mani

Jermaine Manning, auto parts specialist

Though most men stay away from the salon, Jermaine insists that it should be a priority for every man. “It is an important part of your grooming routine. More men should consider doing this at least twice a month at Shays,” he explained. The spa manicure that he received is ideal for clients who wish to rehydrate the cuticles and the skin on the hand.

Steps:

* Shape the nails, then apply a cuticle softener.

* Remove the dead cuticles.

* Apply an oil treatment of your choice.

* Wrap the hands in saran wrap. Place hands in mittens.

* Allow this to soak into the skin for about 20 minutes.

* Remove the wrap.

Jermaine’s take:

“My hands feel so much softer now.”

Locked perfection

Rashida Rose, CEO and founder of Muss Buss Project

“I love coming here. I find that it is a one-stop shop for exceptional beauty services. I mean, sometimes they even have clothing, beauty products as well as waxing, nail and facial services. But most of all, I love my hairstyles,” explained Rashida as she prepared to be styled. She decided to mix things up a bit by adding a pop of colour to her braided updo.

Steps:

* Cleanse the hair with Creme of Nature Sunflower & Coconut

Detangling Conditioning Shampoo.

* Apply Matador red semi-permanent hair colour by Dudleys and hot oil treatment to the hair.

* Braid the hair in an updo.

* Pin in place.

* Mist the hair with Vital Pro Fix-O-Spritz for a soft hold.

Rashida’s take:

“What’s not to love? It looks amazing.”

Cutting Edge

Simone Vaughn, secretary

Simone’s hair was badly damaged. Though reluctant at first, Simone knew that it was necessary for her hair to be cut in order for it to be healthy again. With eyes closed, she beckoned to her stylist to “just do it before I change my mind”. Luckily for her, her hair looked just fab after the blunt cut.

Steps:

* Cleanse the hair with Vital Pro Shampoo.

* Apply Queen Ellen hot oil treatment and sit under the dryer for about 15 minutes.

* Trim the hair with shears.

* Blow-dry the hair.

* Use a ceramic flat iron to style the hair.

* Mist the hair with Vitale Pro Oil sheen.

Simone’s take:

“My haircut is so cute. I know it will grow back in no time.”
