ST HUGHS
LAST Friday, the Halls of Learning team made their sixth stop to the St Hugh’s High School for Girls on their Lego Yuh Mind tour.
The 45 students, who were a mixture of seventh to 10th graders, were buzzing with interest and accomplishment.
Upon arrival, most of the students were already at the testing stages of the day, getting as far as the third challenge, which was good.
Davian Chin, seasoned math and physics teacher at the institution, relished in the uniqueness of the day’s activities and the potential it creates.
“In terms of students that are technically minded, this may push their interest in engineering; not only in the technical world, but also in the science world. This is a short glimpse of the application of math and science to solve problems within the real world,” he said.
Chin added that the financial aspect of the initiative was a major factor to the students.
“This encourages them to want to learn more because not only one area was applicable. They were even given the task to decode binary (when spending MEBI),” he stated.
Marvin Hall, founder of Halls of Learning, was also impressed with the performance and progress of the girls.
“Their progression to this point before lunch is among the best,” he stated.
“The math department showed interest and a lot of the teachers were involved, hence the selection of the students was given much thought.
He went on to add that the batch of students selected seemed to be a stronger academic set and that could account for the progress.
“They’ve been great; they seem to be more on ball in working at logic and their reasoning skills are good.”
The next stop will be St George’s College.
