Walters pushes Rodwood into Major League final
RODWOOD are through to the LIME/St Catherine Major League final after beating DB Basovak, 1-0, in the return-leg semi-final at Spanish Town Prison Oval on Saturday.
The win saw the Portmore-based outfit triumphing 2-1 on aggregate after both sides drew 1-1 in the first leg and will meet Frazsiers Whip in the April 28 grand finale to be televised live on TVJ.
Striker Mark Walters scored the lone goal in the 52nd minute, while Basovak were denied a grandstand finish as Andre Simmonds’ left-footed effort came back off the upright.
With the spoils still even after an exciting first leg, a lot was riding on the outcome of this one. But neither team appeared prepare to take the game by the scruff of its neck in an unenterprising first half.
With five minutes left in the half, there was a tense hush inside the oval when Derrick Dubidad of Basovak hit his head hard into the turfafter falling awkwardly and lay motionless.
Medics were quick on the scene while frightened teammates quickly took their jerseys off and began fanning the tough-tackling defender.
Dubidad returned to the pitch but was clearly not himself and had to be substituted early in the second half.
Rodwood went in front almost immediately after Dubidad’s departure. The striker, who was clearly one the better players on the night, made a surging run down the right channel after collecting a long pass from defence.
With help arriving late, he went solo, cutting inside while holding off two defenders before blasting an unstoppable shot past Basovak goalkeeper Vernon Campbell.
Walters goal brought life to the game, as Basovak induced some urgency in a bid to draw level.
But chances were not as clearcut. Though, Simmonds, who scored in the first leg, nearly came to Basovak’s rescue, as his left-footed snap shot from 14 yards rebounded into play from off the upright on 76 minutes.
That would be the closest Kevin Brown’s side came to equalising, as Rodwood closed out the game with minimum threat offered by their opponents.
