Competitive field for Morrison Mem Cup
A competitive field of hard-knocking non-winners of two native-bred four-year-olds upward look prepared for that elusive second win in the competitive $480,000 Joshua Morrison Memorial Cup Restricted Allowance feature at Caymanas Park today.
The event will be contested over 1500 metres and has attracted a full field of 16 runners. Post time for the race is approximately 5:30 pm, with first post at 1:00.
So many fit horses present could make this event the most competitive on the nine-race card, and it should not surprise to see a wall of horses striving to hit the tape in a final rush for the wire.
No less than eight have outstanding chances of leaving non-winners of two behind. Among them are Jagsover, Golden Image, Serious Business, Anntrack, War Hero, Princechad, Alias Mr Cat and Natural Fantasy.
Jagsover, a consistent sort ridden by champion jockey Dick Cardenas and trained by Anthony Nunes for owner/breeder Courtney Walsh, is among the fittest in the line-up and at 57.0kg is not too heavy to land the gamble. A four-year-old chestnut gelding by Pat N Jac out of Overdraft (Seminole Canyon) Jagsover could be considered unlucky to be still running at this level as he is always well placed in his races.
There are a number of reluctant runners like himself present and it may eventually come down to a question of capable jockeymanship in the end.
War Hero, the mount of the leading rider Dane Nelson, is another one-race winner who is a major source of disappointment. Trained by the veteran conditioner Noel Freeman for owner Life Is Sweet, the four-year-old bay gelding by Burning Marque out of Almost President (Real Quiet), bred by Triple M Distributors, had shown some amount of promise as a three-year-old prospect. But here he is one year later chasing (NW2). Nonetheless, from all indications, he looks ready to go on from here and with the title-chasing rider staying aboard for the third consecutive outing, this must be an encouraging sign.
Golden Image, with the four-time champion jockey Omar Walker in the irons, looks certain to put in another solid punch. Following three good in-the-frame efforts over shorter distances, the daughter of Image Maker out of LSC Choice (Liver Stand), bred by Argyll Farms Ltd and trained by Howard Jaghai for owners WB Racing, should make a bold effort to go on from (NW2), now that the distance has increased.
