Matthew Gore carving his niche

IN the fast-paced arenas of auto racing, a number of second generation drivers are blazing the trail. One such person is Montegonian Matthew Gore.

Competing since 1995, the 32-year-old Gore has been making a name for himself. Holding awards for multiple championships including the National Rally Sport Drivers Championship and the Sprint Championship, he is the son of veteran racer Neil Gore and younger brother of circuit Racing giant Douglas ‘Hollywood’ Gore.

“Over the years, Doug has definitely been my inspiration. Seeing him race as a teenager, sparked my interest in motorsports. My father was also a champion,” Gore told Auto.

“Doug has always been supportive of my career. There have been times when we’ve met on the track at Dover and I’ve walked away with the win. Beating him there in 2010 will always be one of the best moments of my career,” he continued

After a period of absence from circuit racing, Gore was back at Dover Raceway recently with his newly acquired Evolution X (which was previously campaigned by his big brother). However, he admits that the dirt track is where his heart lies.

“I love dirt racing more than I do circuit racing. I am now responsible for keeping the Team MoBay Racing flag high. So for the next event on the Rally Sport calendar, we will be coming with full force with a new engine and a new gearbox and I hope to be victorious from then on,” he said.

Thus far in the 2012 Sprint Championship Gore has been among the top three contenders battling for the title in the highly subscribed and fiercely competitive JA2 class. Hee is currently ranked second in the overall 2012 Rally Sport Drivers Championship points standing and admits that it is going to be a challenge to topple rival Jordan Powell’s current lead, but one that he is ready for.

In the last sprint event, Gore — driving the Team MoBay Racing Toyota Starlet — upstaged Powell in the R & B Auto Parts-sponsored Toyota Corolla FX. Powell was at that point on a run of three-straight sprint victories and a rally victory in the class.
