Uninspired Girlz go down to Canada
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala — Jamaica’s Under-17 Reggae Girlz crashed to a lacklustre 0-4 defeat to Canada in their topof-the-table CONCACAF Group A encounter at the Estadio Cementos Progreso yesterday.
The Young Reggae Girlz were no match for the defending champions and only a 75th-minute shot from Oshay Lawes that hit the crossbar and some outstanding saves by goalkeeper and captain Chris-Ann Chambers, were the high points in their rather poor performance.
Canada, as expected, jumped to the top of the group with maximum six points from two games following their 6-0 whipping of Panama with Jamaica on three points, after the latter’s 3-0 win over hosts Guatemala.
Both Guatemala and Panama, who are pointless, were scheduled to play later and a draw or a Guatemala win would put Jamaica in a very good position.
Jamaica are scheduled to play Panama tomorrow, while Guatemala take on Canada.
Jamaica started with the same team that defeated Guatemala 3-0, while Canada made five changes and never looked any weaker.
Despite letting in a soft goal in the 19th minute, goalkeeper Chambers atoned with some good saves that kept the scoreline down.
Canada, who dominated from start to finish, missed a few easy chances in the eighth and 11th minutes, but went ahead in the 20th minute courtesy of Valerie Sanderson with a low shot that Chambers should have done better with.
Two minutes later, Elissa Neff’s chipped effort from close range eluded Chambers, doubling Canada’s advantage in the 22nd minute.
Jamaica’s first-game heroine, double goalscorer Kayla Gray, looked on the heavy side and was too slow to trouble the efficientlooking Canadian backline.
Summer Clarke, who scored three times against Panama, notched her fourth of the tournament side-footing home from just inside the box in the 55th minute before being substituted in the 66th minute by Nichelle Prince who made it 4-0 with the last kick of the game.
