Beaumont leaps PB at MIAA Champs in Kansas
Nickeisha Beaumont of Lincoln University, Missouri, leapt a personal best, meet and stadium record 6.38 metres to win the long jump at the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Outdoor Championships in Emporia, Kansas on the weekend.
Twenty-one-year-old Beaumont, a Holmwood Technical High past student who improved on her previous best 6.00 metres, outjumped Americans Jennifer Zweifel of Truman State University (6.15 metres) and Lindsay Lettow of the University of Central Missouri (6.14 metres).
Beaumont was third in the event at the High School Champs in 2010, trailing fellow Jamaicans Rochelle Farquharson (6.15 metres) and Janeive Russell (6.03 metres).
Akheem Gauntlett of the University of Arkansas clocked a personal best 20.45 seconds to win the 200m at the Arkansas Twilight meet.
The 21-year-old Gauntlett, improving on his previous best 20.53 seconds, outran Americans Ferrnada Blakely and Lashawn Butler, who timed 20.58 and 20.69, respectively.
Majoring in criminal justice and sociology, the 5ft-11in Gauntlett has also clocked personal bests in the 100 metres (10.41 seconds) and 400 metres (45.65 seconds) this season.
Twenty-four-year-old Ackeem Smith of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore raced to a personal best 13.79 seconds for second in the 110m hurdles at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.
American Keith Nkrumah of Norfolk State University won in a personal best 13.68 seconds, with fellow American Kemar Clarke of Bethune-Cookman University third in 13.89 seconds.
For the second straight year, Smith finished second in the MEAC Outdoor Championships, after clocking 14.04 seconds in 2011 after American Aramis Massenburg who won in 13.89 seconds.
Meanwhile, at the Texas Tech Open Red Raider Open, 20-year-old Jerome Wilson of Western Texas College leapt a wind-aided 8.02 metres (2.9m/s) to win the long jump. American Jarvi Gotch of South Plains College took second place with 7.47 metres, ahead of another American Joshua Flax, 7.29 metres.
Wilson, a past student of Kingston College, has a personal best 7.56 metres achieved at last year’s National Championships.
Natoya Goule, also competing at the Red Raider Open, ran 53.20 seconds for third in the 400 metres won by American Jessica Beard (52.18 seconds) ahead of Nigerian Endurance Abinuwa (52.85).
At the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, Dominique Blake ran a season best 52.36 seconds to win the 400 metres, beating Americans Monica Hargrove, 52.41 seconds, and Brandi Cross, 53.95 seconds.
At a grand prix meet in Belém, Brazil, national record holder Sheree Francis cleared 1.78 metres for fifth place in the high jump. Croatian Ana Simic won with 1.88 metres, beating Brazilians Aline Fernanda Santos, 1.86 metres, and Valdiléia Martins, 1.81 metres.
