Axum, Volvo square-off in Eastern Confed game
ST Mary-based Axum FC are eager to make a bid to return to the Premier League when they face high-flying former premiership outfit Volvo of St Ann today at 5:30 pm at Lynch Par in Buff Bay, Portland.
In the other game scheduled for 3:30 pm at the same venue, Portland team St Georges meet York FC of St Thomas.
The two winners will meet for a place in the next Red Stripe Premier League competition.
Axum, who won the Captain’s Bakery Major League title, turned back Eastern Confederation counterparts Seaforth FC of St Thomas last Wednesday for a 2-1 on aggregate scoreline in the first phase of the play-offs.
Orane Gordon’s lone goal in the 11th minute made the difference last Wednesday, while Volvo whipped Eagle Strikers 5-1 to earn the right to face Axum. St Georges FC hammered St Mary’s Galina, 7-0, to cement their place.
According to Axum’s coach, Michael Smith, his team squandered many chances against Seaforth, but they will be working on that.
