God requires more from us than prayer
Dear Editor,
Oftentimes there are issues in the media surrounding Jamaica being a Christian country. Sometimes the mention of us having the most churches per square mile becomes almost a mockery. This as we boast a very high crime rate and grapple with a host of other social ills.
On the other hand, we are quicker to call for prayer when faced with a crisis than any other country I know. We incorporate prayer in almost all civic services; we have a yearly prayer breakfast and our National Anthem is a prayer.
Given those realities, I am left to wonder why we are so immoral?’ Why are things so hard in Jamaica?’ Does God really care for us?
Yes, we are undeniably among the most prayerful nations and God answers prayer. However, God requires more from us than prayer in times of need. He also said we are to turn from our wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14). As a nation, we do all expect to turn. We recognise God as being able to deliver us in time of crisis but after that, we remain the same.
We fail to head in a different direction, and for the better, hence, the lack of evidence in our society of God’s awesomeness. We are in our Jubilee year. I therefore implore us to give ourselves the gift of change and turn.
I make this appeal to all Jamaicans who care for a better Jamaica. With this turn I guarantee you we will see a change for the better in all areas of our lives as God is true to His word.
