City champs!
EPL: There was high drama all the way at the end of this season’s Barclay’s Premier League as Manchester City had to score two stoppage time goals in order to secure the title.
For about two to three minutes Manchester United thought they had won it with a 1-0 win over Sunderland, however their noisy neighbours were rescued by Edin Dzeko and Kun Aguero in stoppage time, coming back from 2-1 down to beat QPR 3-2.
Despite the loss, QPR stayed in the league as Bolton drew 2-2 with Stoke, with Owen Coyle’s side joining Blackburn and Wolves as the three relegated sides.
In other results, Arsenal secured third place and Champions League football with a 3-2 win over West Brom, but Tottenham have no such guarantees despite dispatching Fulham 2-0.
Newcastle will play in the Europa League next season despite losing 3-1 to Everton. Chelsea beat Blackburn 2-1 and a pedestrian Liverpool lost 1-0 to a late Swansea strike. Elsewhere, Wigan beat Wolves 3-2, while Norwich beat Aston Villa 2-0.
Record-breaking Real
La Liga: Real Madrid became the first European team to attain 100 points in a single season with a 4-1 win against Mallorca. Barcelona was only able to draw 2-2 with Real Betis, however.
Valencia, despite losing 1-0 to Real Sociedad, will play in the Champions League next season along with Malaga who beat relegated Sporting Gijon 1-0. Villareal were unable to avoid relegation as they were defeated 1-0 by Atletico Madrid who finished fifth. Rayo Vallecano and Granada, therefore, both survived despite Granada losing to Rayo 1-0.
Elsewhere, Zaragoza also survived by beating Getafe 2-0 while Levante beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0. Osasuna beat Racing Santander 4-2 while Sevilla and Espanyol drew 1-1.
Congrats Juve
Serie A: Juventus were presented with the Serie A title on a final day where they continued their unbeaten run with a 3-1 result at home as the legendary Alessandro Del Piero bid the Bianconeri adieu with a trademark curling 25-yard goal.
Filippo Inzaghi said a similar farewell to AC Milan, coming off the bench to hit an 82nd-minute winner to give his side a 2-1 victory against relegated Novara. Lecce and Cesena were the other two relegated sides with Lecce going down 1-0 to Chievo and Cesena losing 3-2 to Roma.
Lazio failed to secure Serie A’s last Champions League spot, despite winning 3-1 against Inter as Udinese clinched the last spot with a 2-0 win at Catania. Genoa had a similar 2-0 scoreline over Palermo while Andrea Dossena scored a brace to give Napoli the 2-0 win over Siena.
Elsewhere, Parma beat Bologna 1-0 while Fiorentina and Cagliari ended scoreless.
Editor’s Note: The Bundesliga ended last week, however, Borussia Dortmund claimed the German Cup final 5-2 over Bayern Munich as Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick.
