Majesty Gardens humble Saints in NBL
NEWCOMERS St George’s Saints had their unbeaten start to the FLOW/NBL campaign snapped at four matches afte going down, 73-74, to Majesty Gardens Legends in over-time in the feature game at the National Stadium Courts on Sunday.
Boldon Todd led the scoring for last season’s finalists with 36 points and 13 rebounds, and he received good support from Havando Dunn with 19 points and Christopher Gaynor with 15.
Saint’s Conroy Morgan posted 21 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Kirk Ferguson with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Legends’ coach Ludlow Barker believes his team had to work hard and overcome a few obstacles for the win.
“We are taking it just one win at a time… but we have had to fight for everything… and today we came here without water, but the players said they wouldn’t lose and they came here and fought and got the win,” he said.
Both teams went at it from the start, and after the first quarter the Saints’ were ahead by just two points (17-15).
However, the Legends found their rhythm in the second quarter and overtook their opponent to take a four-point lead (36-32) at half-time.
But that advantage would not last for long as the Saints resurged in the third quarter and outscored their opponents, 20-14, to lead again by two points (52-50) going into the final period of the game.
The final quarter was as dramatic as it could get, with the lead changing hands before Todd shot Majesty into a 65-63 lead with seconds remaining.
However, Anthony White found a basket to tie the scores at 65-65 and send the game into over-time. Majesty then jumped out in front in this period, but the Saints rallied to retake a 73-71 lead.
Todd then produced the match-winning shot when he sank a three-pointer to take the score to 74-73 and hand Majesty their third win of the season.
In the night’s other game, Tivoli Wizards turned back Swallowfield All-stars, 75-55, for their fourth win in four games. Anthony Farquharson with 16 points and Omar Barnes with 10 were the leading scorers for the defending champions.
However, the game’s topscore was Swallowfield’s Dean Whittingham who had 20 points and 30 rebounds, followed by Barrington Napier with 10 points.
Meanwhile, in two matches at Edgewater in Portmore, Urban Knight defeated Waterhouse Blazers, 57-42, and Runnin Rebels stopped Eastern Pistons, 73-61.
Rebels, one the tournament’s pre-season favourites after new additions to their squad such as Kemar McLeish and Javon Bailey, got only their second win in four matches, thanks to 21 points from Randy Wiggan and 15 from McLeish.
The Piston’s Michael Johnson was the topscorer with 23 points.
In the other game, Urban Knights with 13 points from Andre Murray and 11 from Ian Gooden saw off the challenge of Waterhouse Blazers, for their second win from two matches.
Waterhouse’s Brandon Grant led the scoring with 11 points.
