Camperdown staff top UWI in BH beach volleyball

CAMPERDOWN Teachers signalled their intent as a favourite by winning the 14-team Sand Slam one-day beach volleyball tournament on Sunday, May 6, defeating UWI Staff, 11-10, in the

final at Barbican Sports Complex in the beach leg of the CSports 2012 Business House competition.

Playing one short, UWI started positively in the final, taking a 2-0 lead as national player Cheryl Daley showed her experience at serve. They continued on the same trend, moving their lead from 6-3,

to 7-5, and then to 9-7, before they cracked.

Camperdown reeled off two unanswered points to bring the scores level at nine apiece. The game, however, was far from over as UWI took the early advantage and went up 10-9, needing a point to gain victory.

However, it was never to be as Camperdown once again tied the match at 10 apiece before producing a stunning block to win the game, 11-10, which caused wild celebrations among their players and supporters.

Earlier, JUTC pulled off the upset of the day by defeating defending champions JDF, 11-10, in the championship round of the double-elimination knock-out contest.

The top four teams, Camperdown Teachers with 10 points, UWI Staff eight, JUTC seven and JDF six, lead the season’s overall standings, as points are allocated based on performances in each of the events, with the team with the most points being declared the Best Business House Team.

Other results on the day saw AMECO finishing fifth, BOJ sixth, NWC seventh, Guardian eight and RJR ninth.

The season is also sponsored by Supreme Ventures Ltd, Reggae Jammin and Unilever. The league matches get underway on Sunday, May 20.
