Hydel retain Prep Schools Athletics Championships title

DEFENDING champions Hydel Prep swept away all challenges to retain their title at the 34th staging of the three-day 2012 Jamaica Independent Schools Association (JISA)/Capri-Sun Track and Field Championships which ended at the National Stadium last Saturday.

The Corey Bennett-coached Hydel totally outran all 46 opponents that participated in the Championships in majestic fashion as they dominated majority of the finals, especially on Saturday’s final day.

Hydel won with a runaway combined boys and girls scores of 326 points, the most by any school that has won the Championships over the years. It was also their ninth straight hold on the Championships and their 11th overall.

They captured both the boys and girls 4×200 metres relay open events.

Following Hydel in the 34 events competed was former champions Vaz with 140 points, followed by Sts Peter and Paul, 103, Lannaman’s, 100.50, Mona, 98, Quest, 86.50, Ardenne, 86 and Wolmer’s with 71.50 points, the other top schools.

Hydel also captured both the boys and girls sections, respectively, with 126 points and 200 points.

However, the star of the Championships was Chadon Davis of Sts Peter and Paul who won three gold medals in the Class One boys 10-12 by winning the 400 metres in 55.90 seconds after a duel in the straight with Jaise Foster of Hydel, 56.14 seconds; high jump with 1.50 metres, and the 200 metres in 25.08 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Class One boys 10-11 100 metres final was won by Dejour Russell of Hydel in a time of 12.74 seconds, while the Class One girls 10-11 100 metres final was won by Jamani Richards of Hydel in 12.20 seconds. Richards won her second gold by winning the Class One 150 metres final in 20.32 seconds ahead of teammate Gordon in 20.37 seconds.

Mellica Gordon of Hydel captured the Class One girls 10-11 300 metres final in an interesting duel with teammate Tyest Bryan in last 30 metres. Gordon won in a time of 42.37 seconds ahead of Bryan’s 43.41 seconds.

Aaliyah Dryden of Hydel sped to a time of 14.09 seconds to win the Class Two girls 8-9 100 metres final. Blaine Bryan of Rose Gordon won the Class Three boys 5-7 50 metres final in a photo-finish with Tarik Dacres of Emmanuel Christian Academy, as both finished in a time of 7.63 seconds. Dacres won the 80 metres final for Class Three boys in 11.98 seconds from Bryan, 12.14 seconds.

Neville Braham of Mount St Joseph won the Class Two boys 8-9 150 metres in a time of 21.05 seconds ahead of Kaheem Francis of Hydel, who finished in 21.12 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Class One boys 10-11 4×100 metres final was won by Hydel in a time of 49.68 seconds, while the Class One girls 4×100 metres relay was won by Hydel in 51.37 seconds, just holding of Vaz, who clocked 52.85 seconds.

Emmanuel Christian Academy pulled off a stunning upset in the Class Two boys 8-9 4×100 metres relay final by winning in 54.42 seconds, just ahead of a fast-finishing Vaz with 54.72 seconds, while Hydel did not finish as they mixed up with their baton change.

Hydel, however, were an easy winner of the Class Two girls 8-9 4×100 metres final in 54.81 seconds.

Knox Junior School surprised everyone by capturing the Girls 8-13 600 metres Sprint Medley Open in a winning time of 1:24.63 minutes from a fast-finishing Hydel, who were second in 1:24.80 minutes. Hydel, however, returned to capture the boys 8-13 800 metres Sprint Medley Open in 1:49.62 minutes ahead of Knox Junior School 1:53.95 minutes.

The final two events, the girls 4×200 metres relay was won by Hydel in 1:49.55 minutes ahead of Vaz 1:50.43 minutes, while the final event, the 13 and under 4×200 metres relay open was won by Hydel with 1:43.08 minutes ahead of Vaz 1:47.66 minutes.

Meanwhile, two new records were established in the Ball Throw which was introduced for the first time. Olivia Simms of Montego Bay Prep won the girls 13 and under throw with 36.29 metres, while Khalic Hunter of Sts Peter and Paul won the boys section with a winning throw of 50.31 metres.
