When Ruth Royes belted out a soul-stirring rendition of The Impossible Dream for her grandfather Dr R Danny Williams, chairman of Sagicor Life Jamaica, last Sunday — at the dedication ceremony of the R Danny Williams Building, formerly the Sagicor Life Jamaica in New Kingston — many sat up and took note… us too!

I am having a great day. I’m extremely proud of my grandfather.

In a sentence, how would you describe yourself?
I’m a God-fearing lady who loves the simple things, my family, and good music.
When did the music bug bite?
At the age of 17. I grew up playing the violin and dancing, so I guess it was natural that I would want become an entertainer. At 19 I enrolled at Humber College in Toronto and have completed my Bachelor in Music degree with honours.
Which musician, local or international, would you most like to work with?
Definitely Jimmy Needham as he is my favourite songwriter.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
To find a dream and follow it through to the end.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever given?
I always encourage people, as I was encouraged, to follow their dream and see it through.
What is your proudest achievement to date?
Being able to live out my dream of being a musician and doing well at it.
What’s next for you?
The focus right now is to complete an album by early 2013.
Who or what inspires you?
God, my daily interaction with people, art, music, and food inspire me.
What’s in your handbag?
My cellphone, Blistex lip balm, Revlon ColorStay press powder, and a music score.

I do.
Who does your nails?
I do. I’m a do-it-yourself lady (smiles).
What is your must-have accessory?
Earrings.
When you are not working, where is the best place to find you?
Relaxing on the beach.
How do you see yourself 10 years from now?
A successful and famous musician.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned about your grandfather?
That he is the epitome of generosity. He’s the kindest person I know and he strongly believes in making a positive impact in people’s lives, and giving back.
