Benefit concert for Discovery Bay All-Age
JUNE Clarke, principal of Discovery Bay All-Age in St Ann, is hoping that on Saturday, June 29, there will be a large turnout for the benefit show — Educate Entertain Jubilee Concert and After Jam.
The event — a partnership between the school and Reggae Fever promoter Donovan Carter — will see the school benefiting from proceeds.
“The school needs to complete its reading resource room. We also need a roof,” said Clarke, adding that the estimated cost to do so is $1.5-million.
“We are on a shift system and afternoon students come in early. When it rains, there is no adequate shelter so they stand on the corridors and it’s a distraction to the classes in progress,” she said.
The solution, according to Clarke, is to cover three resuscitated containers which could “serve as a holding area, an auditorium, and an extra classroom space,” she said.
The principal said the school needed more computers and books for the library.
The joint venture came about after Carter presented a computer to the school following last year’s staging of Reggae Fever. The visit opened the promoter’s eyes to the school’s needs and he decided to partner with the principal in alleviating some of those needs.
The concert which features performers such as Zamunda, Prophecy, Droop Lion, Mikelous, Hero, Major Lloyd and Hitman Walle will take place on the school grounds, Main Street, Discovery Bay, St Ann.
The event will kick off at 10 am with dance-off, students open day, skits, poetry and drumming closing off with a stage show which begins at 7:30 pm.
“We are inviting past students, parents, good corporate citizens to come out and support this worthwhile venture,” said Principal Clarke.
