Legends flow to eighth straight NBL wins
Majesty Legends scored their eighth straight win in the FLOW/National Basketball League (NBL) after defeating Spanish Town Spartans, 72-64, in the feature game at the National Stadium Courts on Sunday.
The Legends now have 22 points from 10 games and share the lead with Urban Knights, who edged Swift Sons, 53-51, in the other game.
However, Boldon Todd continues to lead the way for the Legends as he posted a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds, along with Havanado Dunn, who bagged 21 points.
The Ludlow Barker-coached Majesty trailed 14-17 after the first quarter, but rallied to tie the score at 37-37 at half-time.
The Spanish Town Road-based club then emerged from a keen third quarter by a single point to lead 51-50 going into the final period.
However, the anticipated battle in the final quarter did not materialise as the Legends turned their game up a notch and blew away their opponents, 21-14, for a comfortable eight-point win.
Christopher Jennings was Spartans’ topscorer with 19 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Philip Reid with 17 points.
In the opening game, Andre Murray with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Fernando Young with 13 points, led Urban Knights to their eighth win from 10 games.
Dinario Jackson and Fabian Thompson were the leading scorers for the Sons with 11 points and seven rebounds, and 10 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
After a poor start, which saw them trailing 10-12 after the first quarter, the Knights restored parity at the half.
However the Sons, who have lost 10 of their 12 matches, would not relent and pressed their fancied opponents all the way and were only behind by one, 35-36, at the end of the third period.
The underdogs kept their rivals under pressure throughout the fourth, and it was not until the final seconds that the Oneil Brown-coached team snatched victory.
At Portmore’s Edgewater court, the JDF beat Portmore Flames, 64-59, to keep their hopes for a play-off spot alive. After leading 16-14 after the first quarter, the soldiers trailed 32-36 at half-time and 44-50 at the end of the third.
The destroyed their opponents, 20-9, to win the fourth quarter and the match by five points.
In another game, Ricardo Willis posted a game-high 21 points to lead Selassie Gardens to a 75-60 win over Waterhouse Blazer.
Selassie led by 12 points, 38-26, at half-time and cruised through the remainder of the game for a 15-point victory. Raymond Layne was the Blazers topscorer with 16 points.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference at Folly Oval, Yallahs Gators stopped Buff Bay Hawks, 71-64, and Portland Pistons turned back Morant Bay Warriors, 82-79.
The Gators got the better of the Hawks, thanks to 19 points each from Xavier Gordon and Kirkland Miller, who also had 15 rebounds.
Hugh Black was the Hawks’ topscorer with 16 points, followed by Garfield Bailey with 14.
The Hawks led 21-17 after the first quarter and 34-29 at half-time, but the Gators surged ahead to lead 51-45 after the third quarter and took the final quarter, 20-19.
Meanwhile, Vinroy Moore scored 22 points and Jermaine Bailey 17 and 13 rebounds to lead the Pistons past the Warriors.
Paul Martin had a game-high 26 points and Donovan Matthews 23 for the Warriors.
