Awesome Wildcat sneaks Radix Mem Cup
AWESOME Wildcat made all the running to win the $438,000 Dr David “Jack” Radix Memorial Cup claiming feature at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
Ridden by jockey Clive Lynch for trainer Gary Griffiths, Awesome Wildcat covered 1,820 metres in a time of 2:05 behind dictating fractions of 27.3, 53.1, 1:19.4 and 1:49.1 to create a mild upset at odds of 11-1.
Dandybelle, who tracked Awesome Wildcat from the off and then challenged strongly in the closing stages, failed to get on even terms and finished 2 1/4 lengths second under Kerry-Gayl Robinson, also at odds of 11-1.
Pasadoble, the joint 2-1 favourite ridden by Rayan Wilson, finished third another three lengths back, while King Solomon, a 17-1 betting option ridden by Richard Mitchell, completed the frame in the field of 12.
Owned by Stimulus Package, Awesome Wildcat, a four-year-old bay colt by Skipping out of Awesome Power (The Medic) and bred by Carl Anderson, was winning for the third time from 29 career starts. He earned $239,150 as the winner’s share for increased earnings of $145,650 lifetime.
Elsewhere on the 10 race card, in the penultimate event, Red Flag, a 3-2 bet ridden by Devon A Thomas, won the Open Allowance race for three-year-olds upward over 1400m, beating the 8-5 favourite Jet Setter, ridden by leading jockey Dane Nelson. Red Flag ran 1,400 metres in a time of 1:27.1 by 1 1/2 lengths in the field of eight.
