Catherine Hall cruise to St James VMBS U-13 title
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Catherine Hall Primary blanked former champions Corinaldi Avenue, 3-0, on Wednesday at the UDC field to notch their fifth lien on the St James VMBS Under-13 football competition and first since 2006.
Deandre Bowen in the first half and Tyrese Gayle and Hanif Hamilton in the second, scored for the winners after Supreme Prep had edged last year’s champions Mt Salem Primary, 4-3 on penalties, in the consolation play-offs between the losing semi-finalists.
The teams had played out a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra-time as Damart Austin scored for Mt Salem and Dondre Bennett equalised for Supreme Prep.
Catherine Hall had the better start in the final, attacking through Hamilton, Gayle and Tahir Hibbert, and should have scored in the fifth minute when a right-sided attack was broken up by Corinaldi’s Calvin Gardener.
After missing some good chances, the opening goal came in the 17th minute when Dalton Wright’s cross from the right side found Bowen, who made no mistake to power past the goalkeeper.
Both teams stepped up the pace in the second half, with Chad Howell for Corinaldi and the hard-running Hamilton for Catherine Hall, who dictated the pace for their team.
Catherine Hall were rewarded in the 38th when Gayle found the back of the net, while Hamilton put the game out of reach of
Corinaldi Avenue in the 52nd, eight minutes from the end.
