SINGER/songwriter Lloyd Lovindeer is preparing to release his Jamaica 50 album and will be including his smash 1988 hit song Wild Gilbert among tracks.

“I haven’t decided the title yet, but it will be in honour of Jamaica 50. I only have one more song to finish it,” Lovindeer told the Jamaica Observer.

Wild Gilbert sold over 80,000 copies in Jamaica.

Lovindeer said his new album will be out by the end of June and will include new tracks such as Do You Remember, which recounts what Jamaica was like; The World’s Fastest Man, a tribute to Bolt; and, Somewhere Nice, a spin-off of the current dancehall hit song by Potential Kidd A Yah so Nice.

The song Wild Gilbert recounts Hurricane Gilbert’s passage over Jamaica and the devastation it left in its wake on September 12, 1988. The category-five hurricane claimed 45 lives.

Lovindeer recalled that hours after the devastation he noticed that his satellite dish receiver had been missing from his roof. He felt he ought to turn his misfortune into music.

He said in three days he had seen enough damage to write the lyrics. But, there was one obstacle. Dynamic Sounds, where he planned to record the song, was closed down due to damage. He had to wait three weeks for the studio’s reopening.

He eventually recorded the song there, using former Shabba Ranks bassist Paul ‘Dr Paul’ Hamilton and his Riddim Kings band.

“The whole process of recording the song took about a week and in a month it was ready to hit the streets,” he recounted.

The rest, as they say, is history.
