LIME/INSPORTS Primary football kicks off
THE LIME-sponsored INSPORTS Primary School all-island football league kicks off today with wild card entry Clarks Town taking on Savanna-la-Mar Primary of Westmoreland at the Elleston Wakeland Centre at 11:00 pm.
In the other match, Holland of St Elizabeth play Clarendon’s Denbigh at 2:00 pm at Independence Park in a competition aimed at unearthing and nurturing young talents.
Stephen Miller, LIME’s sponsorship manager, said this is a continued development of grass-roots football by his organisation.
“Over the past two years, we have invested close to $80 million in the development of the sport, both at the junior and community levels, with our support of the LIME/INSPORTS Primary League and the LIME St Catherine Football Association league, which is growing from strength to strength,” Miller told the Jamaica Observer.
“We at LIME believe in the development of Jamaican football and it’s for reasons like this that we continue to support programmes designed to instil basic skills and identify budding talents with a view of steering them on a path to further development,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Andrew Hancel, INSPORTS media relations officer, pointed out that it has been a long journey for all the teams that have made it to the round of 16.
“New champions will be crowned as defending champions.
Lacovia Primary were beaten by Holland Primary in the St Elizabeth parish finals last week. But pressure will be on Holland Primary to make sure that the championship trophy stays in the parish,” he told the Observer.
He added: “Most importantly, this competition is about talent identification and development for the future and the LIME/INSPORTS Primary League is doing just that, which over time, will improve the country’s football and make us more competitive against the likes of the United States and Mexico.”
“The earlier you can identify and place these prodigious talents into a structured programme, [the earlier] we will as a nation become more competitive on the world stage. And this is certainly one of the main objectives of this competition,” Hancel noted.
The competition, which will end on July 3, saw Highgate Primary thumping Zion Hill, 10-1, to be the last qualifier from the play-offs.
