Belair, St James face Surrey rivals in Prep cricket
MIDDLESEX champions Belair and Cornwall winners St James will take on Surrey finalists Hydel and Mona in today’s semi-finals of the Scotiabank Prep School Cricket competition.
The Belair ground is the venue for both games, with newly-crowned Surrey champions Hydel facing Belair Prep in the early game at 9:00 am, while at 1:10 pm, Mona, the beaten Surrey finalists, will battle St James Prep.
Event organisers were yesterday forced to postpone the game from its original fixture due to torrential rains across the island.
Both Belair and St James retained their respective county titles last week and will enter today’s National Play-offs with one objective in mind.
Belair are seeking to bring the title back to Middlesex since Monymusk did so in 2009 after it was expanded the year before.
Cornwall has never won the title, but St James are hoping that they will be successful at the second attempt, having also got to this stage last year.
Hydel, who won last year’s Surrey title but lost the National Finals to Lannaman’s, are aspiring to become the fourth Surrey team to hold the coveted cup, while Mona will be seeking to repeat their 2010 title triumph.
The winners will meet in the June 22 final at the Police Cricket Ground at Elleston Road.
All four teams will look to their top players who have been consistent throughout this season to get them into the finals and ultimately lift the main prize.
On June 13, St James (161-0) warmed up for their clash with Mona with an emphatic 109-run win over Supreme (52-8) in the Surrey finals at Cornwall College.
In what could be a dress rehearsal for the finals, Hydel (102-9) were pushed all the way before overcoming Mona (85-8) by 17 runs.
The Middlesex final was contested on June 14 with Belair (148-7) winning the rain-affected game by 22 runs over Clarendon’s St Thomas More, who made 126 all out.
