Booming Jamaica St Leger set for July 7
WISYNCO Group Ltd will continue its sponsorship of thoroughbred racing at Caymanas Park on July 7 with the 86th running of the Jamaica St Leger, through its energy drink, Boom.
The sponsorship deal, which encompasses the Bigga Jamaica Oaks and the Boom Jamaica St Leger Classic races, cuts across the calendar, with phase one of the three-year deal ending last April with the 73rd running of the Bigga Jamaica Oaks.
The second phase continues with a card of 10 races, and the day will be the Boom Jamaica St Leger Day, with the company contributing $1.75 million to the programme, of which $1 million will go to the $3.9-million purse of the Boom Jamaica St Leger (Gr I).
The remaining $750,000 will be divided and added to the purses of the other nine races.
The Boom Jamaica St Leger (Gr I), a futurity race for native-bred three-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, will be run over a distance of 2,000 metres.
Sales supervisor Troy Gauntlet made the announcement at the Trainers’ Room yesterday, where Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) racing secretary Denzil Miller Jnr outlined racing details.
Expressing pleasure at how well the first year went, Gauntlet said: “We look forward in our second year of participation for another pleasing crowd attendance. We have included in our planning our valued consumers and patrons who have contributed to the existence of thoroughbred racing in Jamaica.
“Boom energy drink will be on hand at affordable rates to energise the crowd as we expect to have a fun-filled day of… give-aways and activities for all to enjoy,” Gauntlet said.
Miller Jnr promised an exciting day of thoroughbred racing where the feature attraction will showcase the top native-bred three-year-olds seeking honours in the final Classic of the season.
Among the best three-year-old talents on show will be Derby hero, the Spencer Chung-trained Type Writer; Anthony Nunes’ 2000 Guineas winner Uncle Donny; Fitzroy Glispie’s 1000 Guineas winner She’s Traditional; champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta’s Governor’s Cup winner All Correct, and Bigga Jamaica Oaks heroine Exotic Gold.
Not confined to the aforementioned, Miller said Aventura, who finished fourth in the Jamaica Derby, D’Angel and fifth in the Jamaica Derby; Time For Arms, sixth in the Jamaica Derby; Raging Prospect, third in the Governor’s Cup; Philistia, second in the Jamaica Oaks, and Star Flyer, third in the Jamaica Oaks, along with Sirmandi and Aquamoto, are also considered strong performers.
