X6 murder case for trial Sept 17
TWO high-profile murder cases were rescheduled in the Home Circuit Court on Monday.
One of the cases — the trial of businessman Patrick Powell for the alleged murder of Kingston College student Khajeel Mais — is set to start for September 17, while police constable Rushton Hamilton is set to be tried next Monday for the alleged murder of his reported underage female lover.
Hamilton’s case made headlines when he was arrested and charged with murder in the disappearance of Jahneel Goulbourne who was allegedly kidnapped from her home in Harbour View, St Andrew in 2008. Goulbourne’s body is yet to be found.
Hamilton is also to face trial on a charge of carnal abuse in relation to the teen.
Both the Powell and Hamilton trials were rescheduled because of an ongoing murder trial. That trial, over the murders in 2007 of ‘Good Samaritans’ Jhanel Whyte and Tyawo McKenzie, is expected to conclude this week.
The Patrick Powell murder case, which later became known as the X6 murder, made headlines when Mais was shot and killed, allegedly by the driver of a BMW X6 sport utility vehicle. Mais was shot and killed on July 1 last year in Havendale while in a taxi heading to a fete at the Meadowbrook High School.
