Free Jamaica 50 events for Emancipation Park 10th anniversary
THE Emancipation Park, New Kingston’s popular oasis will, on July 31, celebrate its 10th anniversary hosting a series of events during July and August.
Park manager Lisa Grant said that four of these presentations have been designated Official Jamaica 50 celebratory events by the Jamaica 50 Secretariat.
“The development of Emancipation Park is a significant milestone in the journey of our nation,” Grant remarked.
“In July 2002, Emancipation Park materialised and proudly stands as a Kingston landmark and an excellent metaphor of the resilience and strength of the Jamaican people,” she added.
The four Jamaica 50 events are scheduled for July 29, 30, 31 and August 1 at the five-acre park.
On July 29 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm a non-denominational Thanksgiving service is planned, to kick off the celebrations. Entertainment through dance, poetry and song will be provided with performances from The Salvation Army Band, singers Racquel Faircloth and Joan Richards, the National Housing Trust (NHT) Chorale, Jamaica Constabulary Force Band and the Vaz Preparatory School Dancers.
On July 30 from 6:30 pm to 8:30pm “the Emancipation experience” will be held. This event will showcase some of the best drummers in the island, with performances by The Denham Town Drummers, Humming Bird Steel Band, St Jude’s Marching Band, Pan-O-Ridim Steel Orchestra, Peacemaker Mento Band, Portmore Dance Theatre and Sandra Manderson.
A Concert dubbed “Celebration Time” will be held on July 31. This concert will showcase some of Jamaica’s best talent and according to Grant it will be like a walk down memory lane. Performances will include the Emancipation Park band, NHT Chorale, National Dance Theatre Company, Innswood Drummers, Sound of Joy and To Isis”.
A ‘Freedom Festival’ under the theme “Out of Many One People” providing entertainment for the entire family will be held on August 1.
“The park will be transformed into mini-villages and there will be a hosting of art and craft displays, book clubs, kiddies’ corner a food fiesta among other activities,” said Grant.
She added that cultural entertainment will be showcased throughout the day including performances from the Ardenne Preparatory School Drummers, Tivoli Dancers, Akwaaba Drummers, and the Light Blue Mento Band.
