Jamaica’s rich Olympic tradition

KINGSTON, Jamaica — JAMAICA first competed at the Olympic Games in 1948 and has sent athletes to the Summer Games every year since then.

[naviga:li]1976-Montreal: 2 medals — 1 gold, 1 silver[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]1980- Moscow: 3 medals — 3 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]1984-Los Angeles: 3 medals — 1 silver, 2 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]1988- Seoul: 2 medals; — 2 silver[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]1992 Barcelona – 4 medals —3 silver, 1 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]1996- Atlanta- 6 medals — 1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]2000 Sydney- 9 medals — 5 silver, 4 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]2004- Athens- 5 medals — 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]2008- Beijing- 11 medals — 6 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze.[/naviga:li]

The Games of the 30th Olympiad, to start in London in just over a week, will be stop number fifteen.

In 1960 Jamaican athletes competed as a part of the West Indies Federation team that included Jamaican 800m and 400m-specialist George Kerr. Kerr won bronze medals in the 800m and 4×400 relay at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

 Jamaica has also competed in the Winter Olympic Games since 1988 with the national bobsled team, despite having warm weather all year round.

Jamaicans have won a total of 55 medals, 54 from athletics — a large majority in sprint events — and a bronze medal in cycling that belongs to David Weller. Weller took the bronze in 1980 at the Moscow Olympics in the 1,000metre individual time trial.
