Haitian advances in Open Champ by booting Jamaican
TOP-SEEDED Oliver Sajous of Haiti easily advanced to this evening’s quarter-finals round by defeating Camarsh Crumbie of Jamaica in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, as the 2012 Hi-Pro Ace Supercentre Men’s Open Tennis Championship continued at the Liguanea Club in New Kinston on Tuesday night.
The Haitian gave the Jamaican little chance or any opportunity to play himself in the match as he unleashed numerous fine shots which his opponent had difficulty in returning. Sajous won the match in one hour and 11 minutes.
Sajous’ next opponent will be Vincent Williams of Jamaica, who defeated Yussuf Migoko in a hard-fought three-setter, 7-6 (7-4 tie-breaker), 6-7 (1-7 tie-breaker) and 6-4 that lasted more than two hours.
The quarter-final clash between Sajous and Williams begins this evening at 6:30.
The Haitian said he was pleased with his game. “I am happy with how I played… pretty attacking and it takes a lot of hard work,” he said.
When asked about his next opponent, the Haitian said: “I don’t care about my next opponent as I only want to do my best and try to win this championship.”
Interesting to note is that Sajous, although being the number one and senior champion of Haiti, played in Jamaica in the ITF Jamaica International Junior Tournament 18-and-under singles and the National Commercial Bank (NCB) Open Invitational Tournament last year.
He is currently playing on the Challenge and Future’s Circuit where he has played this year in Brazil, Panama and the United States (USA) in qualifying tournaments. At the completion of this championship, Sajous will be going home for training before playing in a Future’s Tournament in Mexico next month.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Jamaica Dwayne Pagon crushed his compatriot teenager William Berry in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to also advance to the next round.
Other winners on Tuesday were Ramone Doyley, who defeated Orick Angus in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, and Vaughn Wilson of Trinidad and Tobago who knocked out Ryan Simms of Jamaica in straight sets 6-2, 6-4; Christian Battaglia of Jamaica gained a walk over into the quarter-finals as number two seed Joe Cadogan of Trinidad and Tobago decided late that he will not be coming again for the tournament.
The Open continues this evening with play in the men’s singles quarter-finals with fourth-seeded Dwayne Pagon vs the winner of Ramone Doyley and Daniel Harris at 6:00 and top seed Oliver Sajous taking on Vincent Williams at 6:30, while in the women’s open, Phadria Kepple will play Franchesaca Chin at 6:00.
