MONTEGO BAY, St James – Organisers of the Ironshore Golf & Country Club’s Jamaica 50 Classic Independence Golf Tournament has hailed the event as a success.

Proceeds from the staging of the two-day event will go towards the Haemodialysis Unit at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

“Although we had the threat of Tropical Storm Ernesto, we had golfers who journeyed from Kingston and St Ann to join those here in Montego Bay. The participants are very committed to the development of healthcare in western Jamaica and Cornwall Regional in particular,” organiser, Angella Whitter told the Observer West.

She added: “We also had persons who did not participate in the tournament who made significant donations to the cause”.

Held under the auspices of the Jamaica Golf Association, the tournament teed off the morning of Saturday, August 4 at the Ironshore Golf & Country Club with golfers competing for coveted trophies and prizes in four categories.

At the end of day two when both days’ scores were tallied, Opeton Marshall was declared the gross winner in the Men’s Senior category with 101 points, while John T Dunbar was the net winner with 111 points.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Category Jack Stein was declared first net winner with 115 points, closely followed by Sherice Walker with 114 points; while Rochelle Prince copped the 1st place gross with 86, followed by Ricardo Perry 85 points.

In the category of men with a 0-10 handicap, net winner was Sean Williams, 99 points; and gross winner Sean Morris, 94 points.

And in the handicap band of 10 and over, the net winner was Ben Buls with 98 points and Teddy Richards gross winner with 88 points.

Several prizes and trophies were awarded to the winners courtesy of the many sponsors, including the Jamaica Observer.
