‘Teddy’ Johnson on target as Wednesday rally to defeat Oldham
JAMAICANS Jermaine Johnson of Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City’s Marvin Elliott, a second-half substitute, had contrasting results in the newly rebranded Capital One Cup (League Cup) in midweek matches.
Sheffield Wednesday rallied from 2-0 down to stun Oldham Athletic 4-2 at Boundary Park in Oldham, Greater Manchester in front of 3,474.
Jordan Slew struck from inside the area in the seventh minute and a header from Jean Yves Mvoto in the six-yard box after 26 minutes ensured that League One’s Oldham Athletic entered the break 2-0.
Johnson, aged 32, finally got English Championship’s team Wednesday on the scoresheet in the 53rd minute when he blasted from outside the box to the bottom right corner of goal.
Chris O’Grady then headed home in the 62nd minute to draw Wednesday level and completed his double in the 70th minute with a close-range shot into the bottom left corner.
Michail Antonio sealed the match with a goal from the edge of the penalty area for Wednesday to book an emphatic victory.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Elliott, a midfielder, executed a late header as League Two team Gillingham snubbed his English Championship outfit Bristol City 2-1 in front of 4,330 at Ashton Gate in Bristol.
It was the fifth consecutive year that a lower league team dumped Bristol City out of the knockout competition.
A penalty from Danny Kedwell on the stroke of half-time gave Gillingham the lead and his strike partner Ben Strevens doubled the advantage on 54 minutes.
Charlie Allen delivered a deep corner to the back post which Tom Flanagan headed back, allowing Strevens to stab home from point blank range.
With four minutes remaining, Elliott replaced Stephen Pearson and in five minutes of time added headed home Brett Pitman’s last-gasp free kick.
Bristol have lost to lower league teams Swindon Town (2011), Southend United (2010), Carlisle United (2009), and Crewe Alexandra (2008) in previous seasons of the League Cup.
In 2007, Premier League’s Manchester City edged them 2-1, with Elliott starting in the game during his debut year for the club.
