Saturday Hustle – August 25

With the MTV Video Music Awards a little over two weeks away the Saturday Hustle team shares the songs that nabbed the coveted video of the year over the past six years. Let’s see how many you remember.

Katy Perry

Firework

‘Cause baby, you’re a firework/ Come on, show ’em what you’re worth/ Make ’em go, oh, oh, oh/ As you shoot across the sky

The single, which was produced, by Stargate and Sandy Vee was from Perry’s hit album Teenage Dream. The album made history being the only album by a woman to generate five separate number singles. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Pop songs, Dance/Club Play songs, Radio songs, Digital Songs charts. It was therefore no surprise that Firework snagged was selected the winner in 2011.

Lady Gaga

Bad Romance

I want your lovin’/ I want your revenge/ You and me can write a bad romance/ Caught up in a bad romance/

Gaga’s ‘Little Monsters’ (an affectionate name for her fans) were extremely proud to see their Mother Monster walk away with the most prestigious award at the VMAs in 2010. Not only did it earn the singer six Grammy nominations but has also been certified quintuple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America . The video was risqué with an intense storyline. It was the perfect mixture of high fashion (as Gaga donned couture designs by Alexander McQueen) and entertainment.

Beyonce

Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it/ If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it/ Don’t be mad once you see that he want it/ If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it/ wo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh/

The infectious lyrics of Single Ladies caused the song to be an instant hit. The video, though simple, had fierce dance moves (which were choreographed by Frank Gatson and JaQuel Knight) that were imitated by thousands of fans on Youtube. Within days of its release, the single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and won the VMA in 2009.

Britney Spears

Piece of Me

I’m Mrs Lifestyles of the rich and famous/ (You want a piece of me)/ I’m Mrs Oh my God that Britney’s shameless/ (You want a piece of me)/ I’m Mrs Extra! Extra! this just in/ (You want a piece of me)/ I’m Mrs she’s too big now she’s too thin/ (You want a piece of me)/

The world held its breath in 2008 as Britney Spears made her public debut at the VMA awards after a series of public mishaps. Though her performance on the big night was lack luster, she snagged the VMA for video of the year in 2008 with her single Piece of Me from her album Blackout. The video which was directed by Wayne Isham was a portrayal Spears’ life at the time.

Rihanna ft Jay-z

Umbrella

Now that it’s raining more than ever

Know that we’ll still have each other/ You can stand under my umbrella

You can stand under my umbrella/ (Ella ella eh eh eh)/ Under my umbrella/

There was no denying that Barbadian pop singer Rihanna had reached superstardom with the release of her single Umbrella. The single made history as the longest running number one single in a decade as it dominated the charts for 10 consecutive weeks. The video was directed by Chris Applebaum and made its worldwide debut on MTV’s Total Request Live. It was no wonder that it snagged their coveted award in 2007.

Panic! At the Disco

I Write Sins not Tragedies

I chime in with a, / “Haven’t you people ever heard of closing the Goddamn door?!”/ No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things/ With a sense of poise and rationality./ I chime in,/ “Haven’t you people ever heard of closing the Goddamn door?!”/ No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things/ With a sense of/ Poise and Rationality!/

The 2006 winners of Video of the Year were from newcomers Panic! At the Disco. The song was the second single released from their debut album A Fever You Cant Sweat Out. The video which was directed by Shane Drake, was a theatrical depiction of a wedding ruined by the revelation that the bride had been deceptive to her groom.
