Hazard, van Persie open accounts

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

EPL: Eden Hazard scored a penalty and assisted a terrific Fernando Torres goal to keep Chelsea atop the table with nine points from three games after a 2-0 victory over Newcastle. Behind them are Swansea, who continued their silky football to beat West Ham 3-0.

Meanwhile Robin van Persie scored as Manchester United came from behind to beat Fulham 3-2 at Old Trafford. Manchester City were handed a lucky point after coming from behind twice due to Liverpool mistakes in a 2-2 result at Anfield.

Arsenal were again held to a 0-0 draw, this time by Stoke City at the Britannia. Tottenham also drew as Andre Villas-Boas’ side managed only a 1-1 score line at home. Norwich and Queen’s Park Rangers also ended 1-1.

Everton continued their uncharacteristically good start to the season by beating Aston Villa 3-1 with a dominant performance. Wigan also claimed three points with a 2-0 win at Southampton.

Madrid drop more points

La Liga: Real Madrid dropped three points away to Getafe on Sunday; Los Blancos lost 2-1 after surrendering a Gonzalo Higuain-provided 1-0 lead for the second time in two weeks. With a draw in their first match and Barcelona’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over Osasuna, the La Liga champions are now five points behind their Catalan rivals.

Lionel Messi secured the win at Osasuna with a brace in the last 15 minutes after some nervy moments for Barca who could have been 2-0 down had striker Nino taken a guilt-edged chance in the second half.

There was a series of other 2-1 wins with Agirretxe scoring a brace to give Real Sociedad the win over newly promoted Celta and Real Betis going down 2-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano. Zaragoza also beat Espanyol 2-1 with a last minute goal from Helder Postiga.

Sevilla and Malaga both drew 1-1 with Granada and Mallorca respectively while a thrilling game between Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna ended 3-3. Roberto Soldado netted a brace for Valencia with Abel Aguilar Tapias also scoring two.

Napoli, Inter start strong

Serie A: Napoli got off to a good start after Lavezzi with the other two members of their previous big three netting. Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani joined Christian Maggio on the score sheet in Napoli’s 3-0 win over Palermo.

Meanwhile, Inter got a similar score line against newly promoted Pescara after a dominant performance away from home. Rivals AC Milan were quite the opposite at the San Siro however, deservedly losing 1-0 to Sampdoria.

Midfield maestro Hernanes scored to give Lazio a 1-0 win over Atalanta. Stefan Jovetic scored both goals in Fiorentina’s 2-1 win over Udinese and Andrea Pirlo scored a free kick in Juventus’ 2-0 win at home to Parma.

Bologna and Cagliari were both blanked 2-0 by Chievo Verona and Genoa respectively while Roma clinched a 2-2 draw at home after a Nicolas Lopez stoppage time goal. Siena and Torino battled to a scoreless draw.

Bayern cruise on opening day

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich were smooth and easy in the opening day Bavarian derby against Greuther Furth, delivering a 3-0 defeat to their nearest rivals Bavarians.

Defending champions Borussia Dortmund also won on opening against Werder Bremen although not as convincingly, relying on a late Mario Gotze goal to claim the win. Fortuna Dusseldorf and Eintracht Frankfurt both made winning returns to the German top division with 2-0 and 2-1 wins over Augsburg and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Hamburg suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Nuremburg at home, while a 90th minute Bas Dost strike snatched a 1-0 win for Wolfsburg away to Stuttgart. Hannover versus Schalke and Freiburg versus Mainz ended in 2-2 and 1-1 ties respectively.

Meanwhile a late Juan Arango free kick stole a 2-1 win for Borussia Monchengladbach at home to Hoffenheim.
