NO major structural damage was reported in sections of upper St Andrew, despite the communities being pelted by heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Isaac Sunday night into yesterday morning.

Residents, however, voiced concerns about repeated power outages over the weekend.

“We don’t have anything like flooding and them things here down here so, and I don’t hear about anything from back up that side. Just the light going on and off from Saturday and low voltage,” said a female shopkeeper operating a business in Gordon Town Square.

She was making reference to Mavis Bank and other communities located further up the hill.

In Mavis Bank, about five workmen drinking at a local bar offered similar information. They reported no landslides, as is common in that area during episodes of heavy rainfall. Instead, they said their nights were made miserable due to power outages.

“Light go weh Saturday night and come back some time yesterday. Is just that really. Other than that we were good,” said one of the men, to nods of agreement from his colleagues.

The roadways leading to that community from Gordon Town were relatively clear, except for their decrepit condition, which forced motorists to drive slowly. There was also little water gushing from hillsides, the norm whenever there is heavy rainfall in those areas.

On the other side of St Andrew, construction on the rural leg of Red Hills Road leading to Cooper’s Hill had to be postponed as stones which were to be used to build an embankment were washed into open trenches. This was also the case in the vicinity of Frazer’s Crescent, where residents were spotted peering over the precipice at the huge boulders below.

Two entrances to the Golden Acres community were made impassible; one due to a tree which had fallen onto a roadway leading from the popular ‘Look out point’, while the other due to rainfall which had gobbled up sections of a road residents called Timbolyn Avenue, located in the community of ‘Mosquito Valley’.

There, residents complained that the authorities had recently fixed only one section of the road but left the other exposed to the elements.
