Spencer, Bailey cop wins in IAAF World Challenge meet
Sprinter Aleen Bailey and quarter-miler Kaliese Spencer were winners at yesterday’s season-ending IAAF World Challenge meeting in Rieti, Italy, bringing to a close the 2012 season.
Bailey sped to 11.21 seconds clocking her third fastest time of the season to beat Bulgaria’s Ivett Lalova (11.24 seconds) with Tezzhan Naimova, also of Bulgaria third in 11.26 seconds.
Spencer, who was fourth in the 400m hurdles at the London Olympic Games last month and retained her IAAF Diamond League title, won the flat 400m event in a season’s best 50.63 seconds to lead a Jamaican clean sweep of the podium places.
Christine Day, a semi-finalist in the 400m at the Olympic Games, was second in 51.97 seconds, while Patricia Hall, who was competing for the first time since an injury in June at the National Trials, was third in 52.48 seconds.
Rusheene McDonald was third in the men’s 40m in 45.46 seconds behind American Calvin Smith (45.12 seconds) and Sudan’s Rabah Yousif (45.20 seconds).
Commonwealth and Pan American 100m champion Lerone Clarke finished fourth in the men’s 100m in 10.15 seconds as France’s Christophe Lemaitre won in 10.04 seconds ahead of Kim Collins of St Kitss/Nevis (10.09 seconds) and Norway’s Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (10.14 seconds).
