KENILWORTH, Hanover – Defending champions Rusea’s High shook off a sluggish first half to beat Green Island High, 4-0, at the Kenilworth HEART Academy field to chalk up their second straight win in Zone B of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition.

Demar Dohman scored two penalties to lead Rusea’s to their third win in a row over Green Island as 13-year-old eighth-grader Stephen Malcolm Jnr and Anthony Walker also scored for the winners, who led 1-0 at half-time.

Dohman scored the first of his two spot kicks in the 312st minute after he was fouled just inside the box, then added a second less than a minute into the second half when Green Island appeared to have been caught on the kick-off and had to foul Walker to stop him.

Malcolm, son of the late former Reggae Boy ‘Shorty’ Malcolm, then beat goalkeeper Junior Robinson with a low, hard right-footer from the left side midway from the corner flag in the 51st minute.

Walker’s long-range shot appeared to have caught Robinson by surprise as the big goalkeeper reacted late and was beaten in the 60th minute.

Despite Rusea’s win, Frome Technical are leaders of Zone B after blanking Merlene Ottey, 5-0, for their third win. Tevin Williams scored his third goal, while Jermaine Clarke, Kevon Blake, Darrien Dove and a Merlene Ottey player scored the others.

Meanwhile, 11 schools, including former champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), Dinthill Technical, Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo, will be seeking to extend their winning runs to three straight games when the competition continues today with 31 games.

STETHS, who beat Lacovia, 3-0, in a rescheduled game on Monday, face Balaclava High in Santa Cruz, while joint leaders Black River will be away to Maggotty High, who beat them twice in 2008, the last time both schools met in the competition.

Dinthill have scored eight goals in two games so far, the most by any school, and will face Tacky, who are coming off a 1-3 loss to Ewarton on Saturday.

Glenmuir are yet to concede a goal in their two games played so far in Zone M and will seek their fifth straight win over Denbigh High.

Garvey Maceo, who failed to advance to the Inter-zone round last year, have gotten off to a good start, winning both games so far and should make it three-in-a-row when they face newcomers Foga Road, who are yet to score in their two defeats.

Zone C leaders Muschett High, who are coached by Hugh Solomon, who led St James High to the title in 2008, will be home to Spot Valley after both teams shared their two games while contesting Zone A last season.

The others schools hoping to make it three from three are Lennon, Browns Town, Iona and Bog Walk.
