1 April 16, marks the date when The Titchfield Peninsula was labelled as protected by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
2 In July, Christine Straw won the Miss Jamaica World crown. She was listed as a semi-finalist in the Miss World competition and was crowned Caribbean Queen of Beauty.
3 June 10, Reggae Boyz made history by being the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in France.
4 In August, Neville Martin won the national Popular Song Competition with Jamaica Whoa.
5 A UNESCO associate body — World Monument Watch — documented the Spanish Town Iron Bridge to be one of the most threatened sites in the world.
6 Jamaica was ranked among the top three places in The Traveline Survey report on the Quality of Tourist Office Service.
7 In December of 1998 the national pantomime was Schoolers 2. Schoolers 2 was written by Barbara Gloudon, and it was her 16th pantomime.
8 The National Council on Ocean and Coastal Zone Management was established.
9 Jamaica held the 23rd Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region.
