Brown, Green top Burger King 7K road race
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Kirk Brown set a new course record and 13-year-old Hydel schoolgirl Monifa Green won the overall female section at Sunday’s Burger King Montego Bay 7K road race as both champions from last year were beaten.
Brown, who was second last year, exacted revenge over defending champion Shawn Pitter, while Damion Bent was third for the second straight year.
The race finished in rainy conditions as Brown clocked 22 minutes and 29 seconds, just under the 22 minutes 32 seconds that Pitter ran last year for the new mark.
Pitter was timed in 22 minutes 41 seconds while Bent finished in 22 minutes 47 seconds.
Green surprised every one by winning the female section in 29 minutes, 17 seconds in 71st position overall out of 285 competitors who completed the course from the Burger King store on Gloucester Avenue to the round about at Freeport and back to Burger King.
Edwin Allen’s Marleena Eubanks, who won the female section last year, was second on Sunday in 30 minutes 08 seconds with her 14 year-old team mate Asshanni Robb taking third place in 30 minutes 12 seconds.
St Jago boys and Edwin Allen girls, however, retained their team titles. St Jago totaled 31 points, five less than their total last year to beat Bellefield High (54 points) and Edwin Allen High (64).
Edwin Allen scored 34 points for the girls’ title, finishing ahead of St Jago High (41) and Hydel (66).
The event was the first in a three-race series with the Portmore 10k set for November 11 and the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K run/walk will be held on December 1 in Negril.
