‘Junglists’ tame Lion at Effortville
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Arnett Gardens nervously held on for a 2-1 win over a wasteful Humble Lion to end their four-game Red Stripe Premier League winless streak at Effortville yesterday.
Arnett were second best for the entire game, but made their hosts pay for numerous missed chances when Kemal Malcolm lobbed goalkeeper Peter Harrison for a 33rd-minute lead.
It was the Junglists’ only chance of the game up to that point, but they would soon find themselves further ahead when second-half substitute Lamar Nelson won and converted a penalty just four minutes after replacing Rohan Reid.
Mark Miller’s 81st-minute piledriver gave Humble Lion a fighting chance, but their late rally proved fruitless as visiting ‘keeper Damion Hyatt was determined to keep his team in the match.
It was a cruel end to the game for the Clarendon side, who dictated the pace all afternoon, but really had no one to blame but themselves.
Lenny Hyde’s side should have been leading the contest by at least three clear goals inside 20 minutes, but the usually reliable Carlington Smith, who hit an upright, and Andrew Isaacs somehow managed to clear the cross-bar from six yards out.
Humble Lion, who are now winless in five games, will remain in 10th place regardless of results elsewhere, but on the evidence of this performance could soon find themselves fighting yet another relegation battle.
