Ja cycling to host commemorative event Dec 2
THE Jamaica Cycling Federation will stage its 50th commemorative development track meet on Sunday, December 2 at the National Stadium, starting at 12:00 noon.
Jamaica’s top cyclists and the most prominent clubs will take part in the meet, which president Edward Harper expects to be “exciting… and a catalyst for track cycling which the federation will be pushing in its development plans for 2013-14”.
Match sprints, Devil Take the Hindmost, 4,000 metres, 3,000m, 2,000m, 1,000m, female, kids, and MTB (Mountain Bike) races, as well as a 30-lap point feature, will highlight the day’s activities.
While the short races have proven popular, the endurance and elimination events provide the most excitement especially the Devil Take the Hindmost where the last rider at the end of every lap or set number of laps is eliminated.
General secretary Mavin Anderson noted that with the country celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Federation “saw it fit to organise this memorable event to mark this milestone with the sport of cycling”.
“Track cycling has a strong tradition in Jamaica and we are doing all we can to revive it to its former glory,” he added.
“With the continuous support from our stakeholders, we will continue to build and grow the sport from strength to strength,” he added.
Sponsors of the commemorative event include Gavimports Ltd, Unique Living, Xtras, Alkatec Company Ltd, Alternative Power Sources and Cycle City & Fitness Ltd.
The Federation said there will be no entry fee for this family event with gates open at midday. Races begin at 1:00 pm.
