Queen’s hunt All-Island double
THE ISSA/Digicel High Schools netball season comes to a grand climax this afternoon with the playing of the All-Island Junior and Senior League finals at the Leila Robinson Courts.
In the opening game at 2:00, Rural Area Junior champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) tackle Urban counterparts The Queen’s School, while Urban Senior title-holders The Queen’s face defending champions Holmwood Technical at 3:00.
Holmwood have won the Senior title on six occasions, while The Queen’s, coached by Marvette Anderson, are aiming for their first lien on the trophy.
STETHS coach Janette Burke says she has not seen The Queen’s team in action, but her team is prepared for the challenge ahead.
“The team will play their regular style what they’ve being playing for the entire season and take the match as it comes,” she said.
Holmwood’s coach Carline Graham-Powell said she has no fear of The Queen’s as her school has won the All-Island Senior title on many occasions.
“I’ve not seen Queen’s in action, but the players have what it takes to be victorious. We’ll be playing our usual style. This is not a Junior final as when we met in 2009-2010… Queen’s won the title,” Graham-Powell said.
Anderson, whose charges captured the Urban Area double this season, will be bidding to cop a historic two national crowns.
“Both Junior and Senior finals promise to be very competitive despite the fact that I’ve not… seen STETHS or Holmwood in action,” Anderson said.
She expect that the Senior final will be particularly challenging as Holmwood are not expected to give up their title without a fight.
“We have a number of players in the Senior line-up who defeated Holmwood on two occasions in the Junior League final in 2009 and 2010 where Queen’s captured the all-island title.
“These players have moved up to the Senior level and will encounter each other this time around for the first time in a Senior final,” Anderson added.
