Malcolm remains confident, despite defeat
MONTEGO BAY, St James – DESPITE his loss to former top 100-ranked Dustin Brown in an exhibition match, Montego Bay’s highly regarded Macoy Malcolm is optimistic, as he prepares for a series of ATP Tennis Futures in Florida in later this month.
The 22-year-old, who is ranked at number three on the Jamaican men’s singles list, said his performance against the Germany-based former Jamaican representative Brown has proved that his game had improved, and he was ready to take on all comers in Florida in another few weeks.
“I learned a lot from this match,” said Malcolm, who lost 7-5 to Brown.
“I did not know how well my game was coming on and I have not played so well in a long time, Dustin brought out the best in me,” he said, adding that he was not overawed by the big-serving player who has qualified for the first round of several Grand Slam tournaments, including the Australian and US Opens.
“No, I wasn’t nervous at all,” he admitted. “I was very relaxed as I knew I had nothing to lose I just had to go out there and play.”
The Futures tour is the first stage of professional tennis where players earn ATP points before moving on to the Challengers, a step down from the ATP tour.
