I retired from the police force in 2011 as the result of a stroke.

During my active service in the Jamaica Constabulary Force I bought an insurance policy from ALICO in 1985. The premiums were paid by way of salary deductions.

I have written to Orion Insurance Company which I learned ALICO merged with to find out if I am entitled to any refund. However, there has been no response. I have also phoned them but was put on hold, and nobody responded.

My meagre savings have been depleted on medical expenses and I am not sure what to do next.

I would greatly appreciate your help.

According to Orion Insurance Company, ALICO in fact merged with Life of Jamaica, now Sagicor . Orion Insurance Company told Tell Claudienne that it was the broker for the Jamaica Constabulary force, the Special Constabulary Force, the District Constabulary and Correctional Officers. The spokesperson said that you were on the Sagicor group plan. However, because it was a term plan, your coverage ended when you retired. She said that the policy covered accidental death, natural death and accidental income replacement. The plan did not cover critical illnesses such as a stroke.

We also contacted the Police Federation. The Federation said that you should make an application to the Jamaica Constabulary Welfare Fund which takes care of 60 per cent of medical bills after health insurance. Where health insurance is not applicable, the management committee of the Fund would determine the type of assistance you could get.

Along with your application, please send the original receipts in relation to your medical bills. Also state when you retired, and what your current needs are.

In November 2012, I entered into a two-year hire purchase arrangement with Courts Savannah La Mar branch for a dresser. The dresser was delivered to my address in Burnt Savannah in early December when I wasn’t home (my son signed for the delivery). However, the mirror was not attached to the dresser. I have been calling them, but no one has come to attach the mirror which in the meantime is lying on my bed.

I need your help.

Tell Claudienne spoke to the manager of the Savanna La Mar Courts branch on December 19, 2012, and note that they sent a representative to attach the mirror to the dresser the same day.
