VIDEO: Jamaicans on their career, education goals for 2013
IT’S that time of year again for resolutions. As such, Career & Education senior reporter Luke Douglas took to the streets of downtown Kingston this past week to ask Jamaicans about the career and education goals for 2013. Here is what they had to say.
Concheta Shorter, ExcelsiorCommunity College student, age 18:I will be sitting my CAPE (CaribbeanAdvanced Proficiency Examination) level twoand hope to get into university to study law;that’s my dream. What a coincidence,because we are in front of the law building[Supreme Court].
Nicholas Morais, diver, age 20:A long time me deh inna di diving ting so meago just continue it. It’s a lot of fulfillment tosave people. I work down pon de KingstonHarbour. If someone drown at sea, dem callwe and we see if we can find the body. Meenjoy it, so me ago stick wid it this year. Menah leave it out.
Dalton Brown, University of Technologystudent:My aim is to become a dentist. I’m currentlypursuing the doctor of medical dentistryprogramme. Hopefully, by the end of this yearI will move one step closer to finishing thatdegree. I have two years left, so by 2015everything should be okay.
Trace Crooks, Excelsior CommunityCollege student, age 23:For 2013, I want to finish my certificate inarchitecture and move on to the degree,before going to complete my career goal ofbecoming an architect, most likely in Canada.My family wants me to come there to get thequalification that will enable me to work allover the world. I want to pursue athletics also.For 2013, I am looking forward to big things.
Howard Coley, homeless person:I used to do security work and for 2013 I hopeto go back into it. We the street people need alot of help. Many of the people here on thestreet are not fools. We don’t want handouts,but Government can help us with some thingslike birth certificates.
Grace-Ann Smith,cosmetologist, age 36:I want to start up my owncosmetology business, andwhere education isconcerned, I am planning todo a childcare course thisyear. I have a love forchildren and so I wish to getinto that field.
Rupert Bailey, teacher:I plan to resume my studiesat the Edna Manley Collegeof the Visual andPerforming Arts, andcontinue to teach. I had tosit out for some time to takecare of my father who wasill, but now that he is morestable I will go back toschool this January.
