JAMAICA Basketball Association (JaBA) president, Ajani Williams, believes Samardo Samuels’ contract being waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday could be a blessing in disguise for the Jamaican power forward.

Samuels was released by the Cavaliers only four days before his contract would have become guaranteed for the remainder of the season.

However, after 18 games this season (one start), Samuels has averaged only 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds a game.

And in 109 matches (11 starts) since he signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2010/2011 season, he averaged 5.9 points and 3.4 rebounds a game.

But local basketball boss, Williams, said Samuels, who will be 24 years old tomorrow, was not getting much game time, which was stifling his development.

The basketball boss argued that it would serve him better to find a team that could afford him more time on the court.

“He has always played well for Jamaica… and he has improved every season, game by game,” Williams told the Jamaica Observer.

“But I always hoped the Cavs would have played him some more… but now I really do hope that he will go somewhere where he can play more,” said Williams.

The former Muschette High star is yet to decide which team he will be moving to, and Williams noted that he has some offers on the table that he’s looking at.

“There are a number of teams with some level of interest in him,” he said.

After a slow start to his NBA career, Samuels had rededicated himself to working out over the summer, slimmed down and returned for training camp in the best shape of his career.

But Cavs coach, Byron Scott mentioned on multiple occasions this season that Samuels’ biggest hurdle remains the mental side of the game, although he got limited opportunities to prove himself.
