BRACO, Trelawny — In the wake of last week’s motor vehicle collision which claimed the lives of three female foreign nationals along the Braco segment of the North Coast Highway, the Trelawny traffic police say they will be implementing additional road safety measures along that stretch of roadway.

According to the head of the Trelawny police division’s traffic department, Sergeant Brenton Brewry, traffic cops will maintain a strong presence along the roadway, which will see the erection of additional road signs by the end of this week.

“More signs will be in place along the roadway and traffic cops will be more visible in that area. So a lot more radar detection or speed check operations will be conducted along that roadway,” Sergeant Brewry told the Observer West during a telephone interview yesterday.

Over the years a number of fatal accidents have occurred along that section of the highway.

The area was again brought into national focus a week ago after Gloria Capleton, 76, of New York, Claudette Grant, 53, and Vanessa Brown, 34, both of Maryland, US addresses; all died in the crash along that thoroughfare.

Cappleton, her daughter and granddaughter, were passengers in the Nissan Tiida motor car that collided with a Toyota Coaster bus at about 11:00 am along the Braco main road on January 2.

The driver, Dwight Harrison and another man, also travelling in the motor car, were treated at hospital and released.

Meanwhile, the injured passengers and the driver of the bus, which was transporting 20 cruise ship visitors, were all treated and released hours after the accident.

Just over two years ago four foreign nationals were killed while four other people — including three UK residents hospitalised following a terrible motor vehicle accident involving a minibus and a pickup on the Braco main road.

Meanwhile, the driver of the motor car involved in last week’s crash–27-year-old Harrison, who is of a Nannyville, Kingston address– has subsequently been charged with three counts of causing death by dangerous driving. He was last Friday offered bail in the sum of $1millon when he appearance in the Falmouth Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The accused is booked to reappear in court on Monday, April 15.

Last year the police recorded 258 road fatalities of which Trelawny accounted for 14.
